In December 2005, a group of enthusiasts of the Icelandic sagas and other historical trails of East Iceland joined together to form an organization. Their main goals were to draw attention to historical importance and events of the Fljótsdalshérað district area especially, as well as persuading other enthusiasts to join them in exploring and expanding the possibilities of organizing and designing suitable opportunities and souvenirs for tourists to the area, both Icelandic and foreign.
The group has a very long name – The organization of enthusiasts of Hrafnkels saga and historical tourism of the Fljótsdalshérað district – but is shortly referred to as The Hrafnkels saga Organization, even though it focuses on more than this one popular saga.
Since 2005 the group has grown and participated in exciting and important projects for the area, reaching its main goals one step at a time.
At first our main focus was on Hrafnkels saga Freysgoði. Signs have been put up along main roads and walking trails where important events from the saga are said to have taken place. A back-pack or pocket version of Hrafnkels saga was published in 2009 in Icelandic with maps, descriptions of walking trails and other information about life in Iceland during the Viking Age. Also an APP for I-phones and I-pads is now available at a very low price containing pictures, stories, jokes, interviews and other information about Fljótsdalshérað and the sagatrails of Hrafnkels saga Freysgoði which those interested can use at home or on the sagatrails.
The organization has now begun its next step, preparing for further work in other areas of the district with more of the Icelandic sagas as well as ruins and other historical events.
